Winter Floor Care for Edmonton Businesses

How salt, sand and slush damage commercial floors, and a simple plan to protect your carpet, tile and hard floors from November to April.

Edmonton winters are hard on floors. For five or six months, every boot that comes through your door brings salt, sand, gravel and meltwater with it. Without a plan, a floor that looked new in October looks tired, scratched and white-streaked by March.

How winter damages floors

  • Salt residue (sodium and calcium chloride) leaves white film on hard floors, breaks down floor finish, and dries carpet fibres, making them brittle and dull.
  • Sand and gravel act like sandpaper underfoot, scratching finish, tile glaze and LVP.
  • Meltwater creates slip hazards at entrances and can seep into carpet backing and under baseboards.

1. Stop it at the door with matting

Most of the damage can be prevented at the entrance. Use a three-part system: a scraper mat outside to knock off snow and gravel, a scraper/wiper mat in the vestibule, and a wiper mat inside to absorb moisture. Industry guidance suggests roughly 4 to 5 metres (12 to 15 feet) of matting to capture most of what's tracked in. Mats only work if they're vacuumed and cleaned often; a saturated mat just spreads the mess.

2. Daily entrance and lobby care

From November to April, entrances need attention every cleaning visit, and in busy buildings, during the day too:

  • Vacuum mats and entrance carpet thoroughly
  • Damp-mop hard floors with a neutralizing cleaner, not just water
  • Dry mop or squeegee meltwater to prevent slips
  • Use wet-floor signs during storms and thaws

3. Neutralize salt, don't just mop it

Ice-melt residue is alkaline, and regular cleaners often leave a film that keeps coming back. A neutral-pH or salt-neutralizing cleaner dissolves the residue so it can be picked up, protecting the floor finish. On carpet, salt needs a neutralizing pre-spray and extraction; vacuuming alone won't remove it.

4. Protect hard floors with finish

Resilient floors like VCT need a healthy layer of floor finish going into winter. A scrub-and-recoat in the fall gives the floor a sacrificial layer, so salt and grit wear the finish instead of the tile. Regular burnishing keeps the shine up through the season.

5. Spring restoration

Once the street sweepers have cleared the gravel, usually in late April or May in Edmonton, schedule your restoration: hot-water carpet extraction, deep scrubbing or a full strip and refinish of hard floors, and a thorough clean of entrance mats or replacement if they're worn out.

Want us to handle it? Our winter program adds entrance care, salt residue removal and scheduled scrubbing to your regular cleaning, then a spring restoration. See commercial floor care in Edmonton or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What removes salt stains from commercial floors?

A neutral-pH or salt-neutralizing cleaner dissolves ice-melt residue on hard floors. On carpet, use a neutralizing pre-spray followed by hot-water extraction.

When should I schedule floor refinishing in Edmonton?

A scrub-and-recoat in the fall protects floors through winter. Full restoration (extraction, strip and refinish) is best in late spring after the gravel season.
